Gale Satterlee

Gale has always loved wood, its warmness, and its natural beauty. He is an artist, with a background in furniture making, engineering, and architecture design.

Gale tends to be a perfectionist in all that he does. He has studied at Kendall College of Art and Design, and has studied under some of the best woodworkers in America—like David J. Marks, Frank Klausz, Graham Blackburn, and Marc Adams. He also holds Masters and Bachelor degrees of Science from two other colleges.

Artist, furniture maker, Gale Satterlee has designed a new sculptured steamer chair made from a hardwood that is managed by the Australian government, and is known by its Aboriginal name; Jarrah. It is ideal for the coastal communities as an alternative for those who want something different than the manufactured teak steamer chair, or would like a replacement for the Adirondack chair. The chair is adjustable, foldable, and flexible with built-in lumbar support. A matching side table, that also folds up, maintains the nautical theme through the use of a solid brass latch and elegant curved legs.

Each individually handmade chair and table is numbered, signed, and dated.

Occasionally I may have a piece or two in my shop that are for sale, but generally a piece of furniture is built to a request, it takes between two weeks and two months, depending on design, fit-up and finishing conditions from start to finish. Depending on the pieces I'm building, whether I’m designing a new piece or two, or if I’m sharpening my preverbal saw by learning something new, I will produce between 6 to 26 pieces per year. When I’m not doing a show, or attending marketing workshops, or woodworking schools, I have created custom commission pieces for collectors and private clients, and galleries.

The pieces that I make are limited editions that I design and build various intricate fixturing and processes for, so that I can create and build a unique piece of furniture that no one else is building, yet be able to offer the piece to several interested collectors or clients. I would not be able to do this, if I only did commissioned work. There is no one else, that I am aware of, who is building anything quite like the pieces that I have designed.
