My main concern as an artist is finding lines that are strong and figurations that are alive. Largely, I am attracted to the power and purity of primitive form.
Frequently, my sculptural ideas are born first in large charcoal drawings on paper. I attempt to surface lines and shapes that draw from my subconscious and emotional terrain, searching for harmonies, rhythms, tensions -- ultimately, a balance of mass.
My goal is to keep the dialogue open. Letting go and waiting for these lines and shapes reveal themselves is my greatest and most thrilling challenge.
As a stone carver, it is important for me to use material within my immediate surroundings. As a resident of Vermont, I have been fortunate to live amid an abundance of slate in a multitude of beautiful colors. With its long history of use in the letter cutting industry, slate seemed an ultimate fit for me and my passion for line.
My recent body of work reveals my study of slate. I have translated my charcoal drawings onto slate roof tiles and slabs using the ancient traditions of bas-relief form.
