Working from a small studio in a Boston, Massachusetts, 19th Century carriage house, Claudia Mills designs and creates one of a kind handwoven floor coverings and accessories. For over two decades the studio has offered a retail line of individually designed and custom created, site-specific rugs. Claudia’s rugs and bags are woven with 100% cotton yarn and either leather strips or cotton fabric in a wide variety of colors.
Unique in today’s textile market of global mass manufacturing, Claudia’s floor coverings are designed and woven in the US. Claudia designs each rug and weaves along with two of her employees, all graduates with degrees in Textiles/Fibers.
“The combination of weaving with strips of fabric and a pattern called ‘log cabin’ has fascinated me for years. I am especially drawn to the textural and visual aspects of this weaving process and the discovery of endless possibilities created by the intersecting of warp and weft. The beauty of this type of weaving comes with the color choices. Another material that I have explored is leather, creating a very distinctive texture when woven.”
