Maggie Pate

I refer to myself as a potter, rather than a sculptor, because all my work, from mugs to large sculpture, is tied to the material I use. Clay has its own language and processes, and a very long history.

My sculptural pieces begin as slabs of clay, coils, or round sections thrown on the potter's wheel. The different parts are joined to make larger forms, which I pinch into their final shape by hand, without the use of molds. I make every leaf, twig, pebble, and elbow wrinkle from clay. For the smallest details, I push the clay into shape using a small, pointed stick.

The glazes I use are all mixed by hand from recipes passed down through generations of potters. Some pieces are painted with washes of the metallic oxides used to color glazes, instead of with glazes themselves. This provides color without adding shine and tends to pick up fine detail. Some pieces are painted with acrylic paints, which makes them unsuitable for outdoor display.

I hope you enjoy looking at my work as much as I enjoy making it!
