Cary Lathan Weigand

Art is a path of gratitude thanking the mystery for being alive. From the chaos of life, I am drawn to clay as it represents a quiet solitude. I think the root of the universe is simplistic and fluid. Clay is likened to the primordial substance from which all possibilities arise. The three-dimensional human figure is time made tactile and immediate -- an expression of how we perceive our place in moments across history.

My work expresses quiet ripples across the sea of consciousness. I attempt to touch upon that which is indestructible.

At a place where flesh begins and boundaries disappear, an earthen ware figurine is created slowly upwards, allowing each successive layer to dry. It is then painted with terra sigillata, wood ash, overglazes, and fired to 2000 degrees. It is finished with layered stains, paints and sometimes wax. Each piece builds a bridge connecting my psyche with the physical realm.
