Joe Miller

I enjoy making and viewing all kinds of images and have never felt the need to identify with any specific genre of photography. However, fine-art photography is about realizing and presenting one’s own vision and I have always been particularly intrigued by the expressive possibilities of black and white.

The photographs here are from medium and large format negatives. While I continue to use film, I have been very impressed with the quality of digital prints that are now possible and have begun the transition out of the darkroom. All of the prints here are made using pigment inks on Velvet Fine Art Paper. Velvet Fine Art paper is 100% cotton rag and produces deep rich blacks.

Loneliest Places

I live and photograph in an area characterized by sparsely populated, wide-open spaces, but it seems to me that the “loneliest places” are those that were once occupied by people. Attempting to capture the emptiness of these places has been a long-term personal project.

Eclectic Black and White

Much of my work is composed of individual images of unrelated subjects where I found the tone values or the interplay of light and shadow to be compelling.
