The luxury and beauty of the steamer chair was one of the first pieces of functional art in the early twentieth century.
Because of the intricacies of the many curved pieces, each of the (54) mortise & tenon joints in my chair are made and fitted by hand before assembly.
Purple Heart dowels are used to secure the crest rail and the rear seat support into place. The frame is glued together with waterproof marine epoxy, and bolted where it folds with solid brass sleeves, bolts and cap nuts, and heavy solid cast brass “stops” are used to hold the chair in its open position.
This construction provides outstanding performance and seamless flow to its artistic beauty. The graceful curves are comfortable as well as aesthetic. The chair is unique with its ergonomic form that uses solid wood bent laminations for the seat slats. These curved seat laminations hold you like a glove, and positions you against the back slats that have been curved to provide lumbar support. Both the back and seat slats are allowed to flex slightly in and out of their mortises to provide comfort that you cannot find in other solid wooden steamer or deck chairs.
Each chair is also adjustable to four positions so you can read a book, set and watch the sunset, have a cold drink, or recline further back and take a nap. The chair is easily adjustable simply by raising the arms and adjusting them to the inclination desired. Large cast brass pawls are bolted to the tops of the front legs, and large adjustable cast brass plates are anchored into the undersides of the arms to provide the adjustability desired.
